Warm weather is on its way and with it comes sports and outdoor activities.  The American Dental Association estimates that nearly one third of dental injuries are sports related.  So if your child is participating in any sport or activity that could potentially harm any teeth or the jaw, we suggest using a mouth guard.  Mouth guards can help prevent dental injuries such as broken or chipped teeth, root damage, lip and cheek injuries, or a fractured jaw.

There are different options for mouth guards so you may choose the one that works best for your child.  The main types of mouth guards are custom, boil and bite, and stock.

Custom mouth guards are a more expensive choice but are a great option because they are made specifically by your pediatric dentist to fit your child’s individual mouth.  The next choice would be a boil and bite mouth guard.  This option is on the cheaper side, and is easy to do at home.  This option unfortunately doesn’t give as comfortable and precise of a fit as a custom made mouth guard, but they still work to protect the mouth.  Stock mouth guards are an off the shelf product that is a general fit according to age and size of the mouth.  These are not custom fit, and they are the cheapest option but not always the best for your child.  We want the most comfortable option for your child so that they wear it when they are supposed to.

If you have any questions about what option best fits your child, feel free to give us a call and one of our team members would be happy to help guide you in the best direction for your individual needs.
